The Brit Awards 2025

As part of my GWIM Project, I decided to re-engage with the Brit Awards, the most prolific pop music awards in Britain that began life in 1977 although has evolved somewhat since it’s inception. I used to watch them and know everything about them in the mid-90s. I was knowledgeable enough to predict all the winners very accurately (although that was partly because they were very predicable anyway..... I don’t know what the situation is now but you only got 1 or 2 surprises back then). My era gave rise to a few of the awards most iconic moments including Geri Halliwell’s Union Jack dress, and Jarvis Cocker mooning Michael Jackson. Other iconic moments include the final public appearance of Freddie Mercury, disastrous presenting by Mick Fleetwood & Samantha Fox, Adele flipping off producers, Little Mix getting political, and Chumbawumba throwing a bucket of water over John Prescott. It suffers a bad reputation amoung people who take their music very seriously and prefer things like the Mercury Awards or more specialist accolades. Its the pop award of pop music. Given my re-engagement with modern pop music last year, I read the nominees and knew all but a few of them, had an opinion on many of them, and was rooting for a couple of them. I’ve also voted in the 5 categories the public can vote in. The other categories are voted for by a large Brit Award members group that is made up of past nominees, winners, and people who are/were involved in the pop music industry. Given my re-found knowledge in this area let’s see if I can predict as well as I did in the 90s. I will give myself 1 point for every correct call (and a percentage of points if I don’t commit to 1). I will also list who gets my vote (‘actual’ in the categories I could vote in and ‘figurative’ if not).

So here’s how it went down.

Predetermined awards:

BRITs Global Success Award – Sabrina Carpenter.

BRITs Rising Star – Myles Smith. Liked his speech – a big warning about the way the music industry and live music is heading. Worth checking out. The Last Dinner Party also echoed this sentiment.

Songwriter Of The Year - Charlie XCX

Producer Of The Year - AG Cook.

Total point for grabs = 13 (but because of my indecision on a couple I can only score 12 max)

BRITs Song of the Year:

My vote (figurative): JADE “Angel Of My Dreams”

My prediction: Myles Smith “Stargazing”

Winner = Charlie XCX & Billie Eilish “Guess” (I should have got that one. Points = 0. Running total = 0/1).

BRITs Best Pop Act:

My vote (actual): Dua Lipa

My prediction: Dua Lipa

Winner: JADE (Points = 0. Running total = 0/2) As she was my single of the year 2024 I’m pleased for her.

BRITs Best Alternative/Rock Act:

My vote (actual): The Last Dinner Party

My prediction: The Last Dinner Party

Winner: Sam Fender. (Points = 0. Running Total = 0/3)

BRITs Best Dance Act:

My vote (actual): Chase & Status

My prediction: Charlie XCX

Winner: Charlie XCX (Points = 1. Running total = 1/4)

BRITs Group of the Year:

My vote (figurative): The Last Dinner Party

My prediction: The Last Dinner Party or Coldplay

Winner: Ezra Collective (Points = 0. Running total 1/5)

BRITs International Song of the Year:

My vote (figurative): Sabrina Carpenter “Espresso”

My prediction: Sabrina Carpenter “Espresso”

Winner: Chappell Roan “Good Luck, Babe” (Points = 0. Running total 1/6)

BRITs Best Hip-Hop/Grime/Rap Act:

My vote (actual): Stormzy

My prediction: Central Cee

Winner: Stormzy. DAMN IT – I voted for him but get no points for that! (Points = 0. Running total = 1/7)

BRITs Best R&B Act:

My prediction: RAYE.

Winner: RAYE (Points 1. Running total = 2/8)

BRITs International Group of the Year:

My vote (figurative): Amyl and the Sniffers

My prediction: Linkin Park.

Winner: Fountains DC (Points = 0. Running total = 2/9)

BRITs Best New Artist:

My vote (figurative): The Last Dinner Party

My prediction: The Last Dinner Party

Winner: The Last Dinner Party (Points = 1. Running total = 3/10).

BRITs International Artist of the Year:

My vote (figurative): Billie Eilish

My prediction: Sabrina Carpenter or Taylor Swift.

Winner: Chappell Roan (Points = 0. Running total = 3/11)

BRITs Artist of the Year:

My vote (figurative): Dua Lipa

My prediction: Charlie XCX

Winner: Charlie XCX (Points = 1. Running total = 4/12)

BRITs Album of the Year nominees:

My vote (figurative) – The Last Dinner Party

My prediction – Charlie XCX

Winner: Charlie XCX “Brat” (Points = 1. Running total = 5/13

My score: 5/13

My score for acts I voted for that won = 2/5

Considering that last year I’d have known almost none of them so it would have been a score of 0....  I’ll take it.
